Description

With the title The Stronghold of Freedom, the Little Hero returns this year in his classic form as a popular reading! A new creation by Giorgos Vlachos on the script and Kostas Frangiadakis on the illustration.

The story is generally inspired by a real historical event from the Occupation. On April 28, 1944, three young members of E.P.O.N., 18-year-old Dimitris Avgeris and 17-year-old fighters Konstantinos Foltopoulos and Athanasios Kiokmenidis, barricaded in a single-family house, faced about 200 besiegers. The aim of the raid was the large arms and ammunition warehouse of ELAS in the Byron-Gouva area.

The battle lasted almost seven hours, and in the end, the three fighters fell in turn, with the last being their group leader, who made a heroic suicidal exit, shouting, "We have defeated you, monsters!" That little house came to be known as the Castle of Hymettus and the Fortress of Heroes, and today, the municipality of Hymettus honors the heroic fallen every year with an event in Hymettus Square.

Following the writing codes of the reading "Little Hero," the three heroic defenders of the fortress-armory were generally part of the National Resistance without reference to any specific historical resistance organization.
