Shortly before the war of 1940, somewhere in Marousi, Eleftheria, a ten-year-old girl, lives with her parents. Her younger twin siblings call her Letro and when they are angry with her, they call her Laveran's plasmodium. She detests housekeeping and "women's" chores, while she is crazy about everything her father disapproves of: She reads books voraciously, eagerly awaits to see theater, sneaks peeks at the newspaper, and wishes to someday resemble Sophocles' Antigone. On the upper floor of their house, Mr. Marcel, a Frenchman who permanently resides in Greece, has his nephew Benoit under his protection, who becomes an inseparable friend of the children. Their toys are few - marbles, tops, jump ropes, yoyos, and a pair of roller skates with wheels - but their imagination is inexhaustible. Together, they concoct a thousand and one stories that enchant even themselves. And how much more they would think to do if they weren't hindered by the grown-ups... The grown-ups and the children. Two worlds so different that no matter how many years pass, their laws and language will never be common. Each carries their own truth. That's why, after all, behind a purple umbrella, many things can be hidden!
