The treatise "On Tranquility" by Plutarch, one of the eighty or more texts that make up his collection of Morals, belongs to the scholarly genre of dissertation.
This genre was widely disseminated in the Greco-Roman world, from the Hellenistic period onwards. The "dissertations" - texts of popularized moral theory - were written in their own stylistic rules, were integrated into the dominant climate of syncretism among Cynic, Stoic, and Epicurean teachings, and were aimed, with practical objectives, at the general public.
