"The Merchant of Venice" is one of Shakespeare's most famous works, where the noble Venetian, Bassanio, hopes to win the beautiful heiress Portia. However, he needs financial help from his friend Antonio. Antonio agrees, but he must borrow from the Jewish moneylender Shylock, who imposes as a condition for the loan the sacrifice of a pound of Antonio's flesh. In the most famous courtroom scene of the play, Portia proves to be one of Shakespeare's most intelligent heroines, disguised as a lawyer and defeating Shylock's claims while simultaneously expressing her humanitarian reason with the question: 'Hath not a Jew eyes?'

The play, considered sometimes anti-Semitic while being strongly liberal for its time, is at its heart a bitter dramatic story that explores the noble themes of prejudice, justice, and honor.
