Edited by: Konstantina E. Botsiou, Sotiris Rizas
The book examines what the Greek Revolution of 1821 achieved based on the conditions of the time as well as the aspirations of the Greeks, the goals that were realized, and the hopes that were dashed. It chronologically spans the 100 years that separate the Revolution from World War I and the end of the Great Idea, a period that offers opportunities for assessment but remains "blurred" in collective memory and challenging in historiography.
The 12 distinguished historians who collaborated on its creation present Greece with many new elements from three perspectives: state-institutions, army-ideology-foreign policy, society-identity. The Greek case emerges as an organic part of European history while being distinct at the same time.
The chapters of the book bring to life themes such as the state's identity and the local implementation of parliamentarism, the distancing from Balkan identity and the concept of being Greek, the army and the Great Idea, taxation as a means of creating a national economy, the formation of leadership, the influence of the Great Powers, the mission of the university, the goals of the healthcare system, and the organization of internal security.
The result is a book that covers the topic comprehensively and leads the reader to understand the Greece that is less familiar to them, but essential for comprehending both the Revolution and the modern Greek state.
The series GLOBAL AND MODERN HISTORY includes works by Greek and foreign authors on Greek, European, and world history with a penetrating and non-dogmatic perspective. Today's inquiries connect with events, ideas, and dynamics of the past. The series highlights History as a living part of the identities and decisions that accompany our steps into the present and future.
