Bridge: I publish here two of my books from the 1980s. The topics are primarily linguistic and secondarily educational, mutually complementing the contents of Names' Visitation and in a way form a unity.

Language and Tradition (1st edition 1980, ELIAS) reproduces its enhanced edition from Kedros (1984), while Stasima and Exodos is reprinted as it was circulated in 1988 by the Friends' Publications. In this final form of the texts, only minimal improvements have been made in wording and expression, typographical oversights have been corrected, the punctuation has been fixed, and the historically more consistent spelling that I adopt is followed.

The reader does not simply have before them milestones of my writing journey. Years have passed, but things have not changed – rather we have gotten used to them. Time in Greece is maritime: it ripples on the surface, while in the depths, everything remains stagnant and the same.

In the following pages, one can relive or learn from a dissenting perspective both the linguistic and educational events of the early post-dictatorial period and identify the reasons that led us to where we are today. If the educational choices reflect the visions of post-dictatorial Greece, the linguistic choices reveal how it perceived its spiritual essence – its idea of itself.

In such a perspective, Names' Visitation concludes in Freedom and Language. A strong Greek centrism runs through the texts of this particular volume. It is an affirmation of the uniqueness of Hellenism, which, also due to the inevitable reiteration of certain seminal positions, creates the impression of ideological obsessions on issues that I was still willing to rethink and discuss back then.
