It never ceases to shock me that many take peace for granted. I am grateful for it every day. It is not a given. Millions of men, women, and children live through war every day. Their reality is violence, destroyed homes, and the death of innocents. And the only choice they have is to leave. To "choose" to be displaced. It is hard to call this a choice.
By Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. Every day, we read and hear statistics and reports about the millions of people in the world who are living as displaced persons. Nobel Peace Prize winner Malala Yousafzai comes to reveal the stories of the real individuals behind these cold statistics.
Visiting refugee camps, Malala relived her own story – when as a young child she was displaced within her own country, Pakistan, and later, as a world-renowned activist, had the ability to travel anywhere she wanted in the world, except for her beloved homeland.
In the book "We Are Here: Refugee Girls," she not only describes her experience of the difficult struggle to adapt to a new life far from her home but also presents the personal stories of some remarkable girls she met on her travels – girls who lost friends, relatives, and often the only world they had learned to live in.
In a time of migration crises, wars, and cross-border conflicts, "We Are Here" is a vivid reminder that each of the 68.5 million displaced people on our planet is a human being – often young – like us, with hopes, dreams, and fundamental rights to life and dignity.
