Description

Description

This book deals, from a historical and sociolinguistic perspective, with future paraphrases from selected literary texts, both poetic and prose (16th - 17th centuries), from the southern - southeastern region, specifically focusing on texts from Crete, southern Peloponnese, Patmos, Chios, the Ionian Islands, and Cyprus.

In particular, it focuses on paraphrastic structures of the verbs μέλλω (will), έχω (have), θέλω (want), motion verbs, and copulative/existential verbs and their meanings/uses that precede or follow the future meaning/use.

The analysis of the data is quantitative and qualitative and tracks, within the context of the process of grammaticalization, the progression, for example, from the form μέλλω to μελλα, from υπάγω to πα, or the trajectory from the structure θέλω + infinitive to θα + subjunctive.

It shows that the variety observed in future structures is systematic. It depends on the changes that occur in the language over time, which are linked to historical events (conquests - linguistic contact, political and social changes, etc.), and thus to the area where these occur.

It is also related to the level of language use, which is determined by the textual genre, the purpose of writing, the educational level and social status of the creator, as well as the sources and writing models employed.
