Description

The Bowers & Wilkins AM-1 (Architectural Monitor) are passive two-way wall-mounted speakers (All-Weather Architectural Speakers), specially designed to deliver high-fidelity Hi-Fi sound both indoors and outdoors. They are built with a durable synthetic-material cabinet and an aluminium grille, offering resistance to moisture, ultraviolet (UV) radiation, and extreme weather conditions. They feature a 5-inch (130 mm) bass/midrange driver with a woven glass fibre cone and a 1-inch (25 mm) aluminium tweeter with a Nautilus tube. To enhance bass response without using a port, they incorporate a rear Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR). They come with a steel wall bracket featuring an integrated cable management system and 220-degree rotation.

Acoustic Architecture & Glass Fibre & Nautilus Drivers

The Bowers & Wilkins AM-1 features a 5-inch (130 mm) mid/bass driver with a woven glass-fibre cone, which offers high stiffness and low mass for clear vocal reproduction. High frequencies are handled by a 1-inch (25 mm) aluminium tweeter featuring the patented Nautilus tapered tube technology, which absorbs unwanted sound radiating from the rear of the dome, delivering clear, detailed treble up to 50 kHz.

Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR) & Waterproof Design

To achieve deep bass response down to 46Hz without the vulnerabilities of traditional Bass-Reflex ports in outdoor environments, the AM-1 uses a rear-mounted Auxiliary Bass Radiator (ABR). This design keeps the cabinet completely sealed and protected from water, dust, and moisture, while ensuring compact, controlled bass.

Mounting System, Internal Wiring & Weather Resistance

The speaker features a durable construction made of reinforced synthetic material and an aluminum grille, with high resistance to UV radiation and temperature fluctuations. The included wall bracket incorporates the EasyFit wiring system, where the cables connect directly to the bracket and the audio connection to the speaker is made automatically when it is mounted. The bracket allows horizontal or vertical installation and can rotate up to 220 degrees.

Review this product
  • An "unknown", unique model from a well-known company, Bowers and Wilkins. Unique because 1) it is designed for outdoor spaces (described as an "architectural monitor", waterproof with a metallic casing and support base) and 2) it is specifically designed for wall mounting. Its construction quality is top-notch, nothing like the "professional", black, plastic speakers from other companies, while the mounting base, which also incorporates the signal cables, looks otherworldly! Only the bases could cost 300 euros per pair! The speaker itself is a gem for any space! On its back, there is a passive woofer that enhances the lows and... visibly moves when in use! The philosophy of wall mounting solves many placement issues. These particular speakers don't require any floor space or stands. The fact that they are recommended for outdoor use certainly didn't stop me from using them in my living room. And I wasn't disappointed! Their lows are more than sufficient, even lavish I dare say, for their size, with punch and good control. The highs are transparent, crisp, and smooth without being bothersome. The cymbals have a metallic tone, rarely heard in speakers of this price range. With the tone bypass activated on my amplifier, the bass and treble don't need any boost or attenuation. With other speakers I had, I couldn't achieve a flat sound. The stereo image, of course, appears shallow due to the wall mounting. The mid frequencies appear slightly compressed and not particularly sweet, like with the Klipsch RP-500m, which I had before and consider reference speakers in this category! With one difference: The highs of the Bowers and Wilkins are unbeatable, as well as the timing. With the Klipsch, you want to sit back in the armchair and enjoy! With the Bowers and Wilkins, you want to get up and dance! If you have space issues, definitely give them a listen! They will probably become your next speakers. And forever!
