The "National Theatre" (or "Royal Theatre," as it was called during certain periods) developed a vibrant and significant activity regarding the performances of ancient Greek tragedy throughout its operation, resulting in the creation of a distinct directorial and acting "tradition," the most essential features of which were associated with the grandiose delivery of speech, the loud and clear articulation (which sometimes bordered on pompous recitation), as well as the exaggerated movements of the upper part of the body, which reached the limits of standardization.

Furthermore, the Chorus would repeat characteristic words or phrases and, combined with its standardized movements, would enhance the impression of ancient propriety. Finally, the absolute respect for the text of the original, the archaic sets and costumes, the crowd scenes, as well as the incorporation of elements of Greek and Byzantine music intensified the impression of a specific "tradition" existing.

This work as a whole aspires to explore the formation and evolution of the "tradition" of the National Theatre as well as its key characteristics by systematically examining the performances themselves through textual sources and audiovisual material. The first volume focuses on the directorial approaches to ancient Greek tragedy by Thomas Oikonomou, Photo Politis, and Dimitris Rondiris. The second volume focuses on the directorial approaches to ancient Greek tragedy by Takis Mouzenidis, Alexis Minootis, and Alexis Solomos.
