Man first used spoken language and then written language. With spoken language, man has direct contact with his fellow humans. He sends or receives messages directly without using artificial means (e.g., the telephone). Only when he talks to someone who is far away does he use artificial means.
With spoken language, man reveals his emotional states and fluctuations. He conveys all the nuances of his feelings and ideas. He becomes more persuasive with the use of lively and strong spoken language. He expresses his experiences and life events, thoughts and feelings, interests and concerns simply and spontaneously. He is full of strength and vigor, color and rhythm, emotion and passion. He finds objective truth better through lively and impartial dialogue. He can communicate with his fellow humans, even if he is illiterate.
However, because man cannot communicate with other distant fellow humans or with absentees, he invented writing. With writing, language becomes immortal. Because spoken language is not lost. Language is preserved through the ages. Space and time are conquered. With written language, man sharpens his memory and judgment, multiplies his knowledge, and preserves the intellectual creations of the past. He maintains historical memory, the experience and knowledge of his fellow humans. He exchanges scientific knowledge and spreads ideas throughout humanity. He serves the most complex and demanding forms of communication with others (e.g., with literature, he expresses his artistic demands). He satisfies complex needs (e.g., answers complex scientific issues). He uses appropriate vocabulary and correct syntax. He expresses himself with density, precision, clarity, and simplicity.
Therefore, written language is equally necessary, especially in our time, although spoken language is invaluable.
