The masterpiece of Gibbon comes with this volume [the Second (half-volume A)] to cover a very interesting period not only for Rome and Greece but for the history of humankind as a whole: the emergence of Christianity and the end of the Ancient World.

According to Gibbon, the Ancient Religion had declined by that time and had lost its direction. Almost daily, a new God was added, originating from other peoples. In contrast, the monolithic new monotheistic religion based on the Mosaic law, with somewhat freer expressions, came to replace the religion of the Ancestors, whose followers, seeing the danger, tried in various ways to react and pressed the Roman rulers to take measures.

This volume provides a detailed account of the actions of Diocletian - with the persecutions - as well as other co-emperors until the time of Constantine, when the situation changes. Dozens of details based on sources from a historian that no one in Greece has published for so many years. The reason why is answered by the content of the book itself, particularly in the chapters of this volume.
