Description

Description

The city is today considered the quintessential space for the emergence and realization of new identities and socialities. It is where the processes of deterritorialization and reterritorialization manifest in the context of modern globalization.

The areas within a city (buildings, streets, squares, monuments, neighborhoods), or even the city itself as a whole, constitute "contested spaces," fields of social and cultural conflicts aimed at control, use, management, and appropriation. Thus, they represent privileged sites for the study of power relations and resistance.

The problematic of these relationships, as developed in the social sciences, intertwines here with the spatial approach: the formation of power and resistance relations through space and vice versa, the formation of spatiality through them, are the main axes running through the texts of this volume - studies of space in the modern world and particularly in Greek society, written primarily by anthropologists, but also by historians, geographers, and architects.
