Excellent stories both, remind us what really matters in our lives. Especially the death of Ivan Ilyich has much to teach us about how great and pointless importance we give to material goods. I highly recommend it.

Description & Specifications

The first work "How Much Land Does a Man Need?" revolves around human greed and the insatiable vanity of man to acquire as much as possible. The author, with a simple, unadorned style and a rhythm that captivates, chronicles the adventures of the peasant Pahom in the provinces of pre-revolutionary Russia, in his superhuman effort to acquire more and more arable land. The germ of greed is born within him, grows, blinds him, and guides him.

In the novella "The Death of Ivan Ilyich," Tolstoy sketches the life and death of a high-ranking judge, a public servant who has achieved what is considered social success. At the end of his life, Ivan Ilyich, terrified, confronts a very simple yet crucial question: "Have I not lived as I should have?" questioning whether his life had any real meaning or if it was consumed by conventions and illusions.

Both texts in this edition were published in 1886. Reading them today, we are astonished by how little humanity has changed, how similar its passions and weaknesses are, how close and familiar this era and this literature feel, and how relevant a writer who studied life so deeply and persistently remains, ultimately.
