Varietal Composition: Single Malt

Region: Scotland

Tasting Notes: In the early 1970s, Benriach broke convention in Speyside by returning to the distillation of batches of whisky in the old 19th-century style, using malted barley smoked with Highland peat. This rich Highland wood peat imparts subtly sweet and smoky notes to Benriach peated whiskies.

Description

Varietal Composition: Single Malt

Region: Scotland

Tasting Notes: In the early 1970s, Benriach broke convention in Speyside by returning to the distillation of batches of whisky in the old 19th-century style, using malted barley smoked with Highland peat. This rich Highland wood peat imparts subtly sweet and smoky notes to Benriach peated whiskies.

Benriach The Smoky Ten is crafted from a combination of peated and unpeated spirit. It is matured for at least ten years in a combination of three barrels: bourbon, Jamaican rum casks, and virgin oak. The whisky then evolves adeptly to create luscious notes of fruit, aromatic smoke, and toasted oak spice, lingering in the perfectly balanced sweet and smoky finish.

I did not expect to like it so much as I haven't heard many people talking about this ten-year-old. It is peaty, but not as intense as Islay smoky whiskies. In terms of taste, apart from the peat, I get hints of orange and lemon zest. For some reason, the profile of this whisky reminded me of Talisker 10, just more peaty and with less maritime air. Very good value for money.
