Description

The KEF LS50 Meta are passive 2-way bookshelf/stand-mount speakers, designed for high-fidelity Hi-Fi stereo listening and demanding studio monitoring applications. They are an evolution of the iconic LS50 model, incorporating Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT) for the first time, which absorbs 99% of unwanted sound waves from the rear of the tweeter. They feature the 12th-generation 5.25-inch (130 mm) Uni-Q coaxial driver array with an integrated 1-inch (25 mm) aluminium tweeter. The cabinet is made from low-inertia composite material (DMC) with an internal Constrained Layer Damping brace, while the Bass-Reflex system features a flexible rear-tuned port (Off-Centre Flexible Port) to reduce midrange colouration.

Basic Features

  • Speaker Type: 2-Way Passive Bookshelf / Standmount Speaker (Bass-Reflex)
  • Uni-Q Coaxial Driver (12th Gen): 5.25" (130 mm) aluminium cone mid/bass driver
  • Tweeter (High Frequencies): 1" (25 mm) vented aluminium dome with MAT technology
  • Recommended Amplifier Power: 40 – 100W
  • Frequency Response (±3dB): 79Hz – 28kHz
  • Frequency Range (-6dB): 47Hz – 45kHz
  • Sensitivity: 85 dB (2.83V / 1m)
  • Maximum SPL: 106 dB
  • Nominal Impedance: 8 Ohms (minimum 3.5 Ohms)
  • Harmonic Distortion (90dB, 1m): < 0.4% (175Hz – 20kHz), < 0.1% (300Hz – 10kHz)
  • Crossover Frequency: 2.1kHz
  • Cabinet Type: Bass-Reflex with rear-tuned Flexible Port
  • Connection Terminals: Gold-plated single binding posts
  • Colour / Finish: Carbon Black (matte black finish)
  • Dimensions (H x W x D): 302 x 200 x 280.5 mm (depth of 280.5 mm including terminals)
  • Weight (per speaker): 7.8 kg

Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT)

The KEF LS50 Meta incorporates the revolutionary Metamaterial Absorption Technology (MAT). This complex labyrinth-like structure contains 30 channels, each of which effectively absorbs a specific frequency. Working together, the channels act as an acoustic “black hole,” absorbing 99% of unwanted sound energy from the rear of the tweeter (compared with around 60% in conventional designs), eliminating distortion and delivering cleaner, more natural sound.

12th Generation Uni-Q Coaxial Driver

The 12th-generation Uni-Q driver array places the 1-inch (25 mm) tweeter precisely at the acoustic centre of the 5.25-inch (130 mm) mid/bass cone. This Point Source design ensures smooth, even sound dispersion throughout the room, widening the sweet spot. The 12th generation features a redesigned tweeter damping system and an upgraded motor for lower distortion in the mid-frequency range.

Cabinet Design, Flexible Port & Inertial Damping

The LS50 Meta cabinet features a curved front baffle made from Dough Moulding Compound (DMC) to minimise wave diffraction. Inside, Constrained Layer Damping (CLD) technology is combined with cross-bracing to damp vibrations. The rear-facing Bass-Reflex port (Off-Centre Flexible Port) has flexible walls and an aerodynamic profile, preventing midrange resonances from colouring the sound.

Good speakers but with the addition of a subwoofer... with low sensitivity which means an amplifier of at least 70-80 watts is needed for them to sound loud, unfortunately just as I was seriously considering buying them I noticed that their price increased by 300 euros (!)
