Saint John of Damascus was an ecclesiastical man of the era during which, in the broader area where he lived (Syria, Palestine), after the flourishing of Christian Letters and Theology, a decline had occurred due to the emergence of Islam, persecutions, and iconoclasm.
This saint stood out among the ecclesiastical men of his time as the most prominent figure. The reason for this lies in his achievement to systematically and methodologically summarize the findings of patristic theology, especially at a time of decline when "summaries" sufficed for the general religious needs of many.
Moreover, the defense of the honorable veneration of holy images was so significant that his teaching on this matter was ratified by the decision of the Seventh Ecumenical Council (787). His influence was not limited to the East; it also extended to the West and affected what is called "scholastic" theology.
