The most important shield against germs is our skin. It acts as a barrier to the external environment while simultaneously helping to maintain conditions inside the body. Sometimes the skin is injured and the result is a wound. Infections occur more frequently when the skin does not heal quickly or properly, as more germs then penetrate the wound. Therefore, healing a wound is the primary goal for protection against infections.

Healing a wound is a complex and gradual process that begins immediately after the injury occurs. Blood gathers in the area and begins to clot, forming a bridge over which the skin of the wound from one side can cross to meet the skin from the other side. Special cells begin to grow and multiply to cover the area. Additionally, the body sends special cells, the phagocytes, to the injured area, which are intended to "fight" the germs, so that they do not grow excessively, creating various problems.

The healing process is influenced positively or negatively by various factors. Proper nutrition, warmth, hydration, and the absence of systemic diseases favor the good healing of a wound. More than all the factors, however, healing is delayed by the presence and especially the growth of germs.
