This book is a linguistic study consisting of two main parts. In the first part, we attempt to present, analyze, and partially interpret the process, mechanism, and ways in which our current language borrows, adopts, and integrates words and other linguistic elements from other, mainly neighboring, languages into its core vocabulary. The most important conclusions we reached with this study are that foreign words enrich the existing vocabulary and are necessary for the linguistic expression of foreign and unknown products, concepts, and terms in our language. Moreover, the adopted foreign words do not affect either the structure or the phonological and morphological linguistic system of our language.
In the second part, we present an essential and representative sample of foreign words in our modern Greek language in alphabetical order along with their main meanings and related derivative words.
Georgios Chr. Sakellariadis was born in Aroania (Sopoto) Kalavryta. He studied at the School of Philosophy at the University of Athens. He received a scholarship from IKY for the USA, where he studied scientifically for four consecutive years the modern linguistics of Noam Chomsky and, secondarily, classical philology. From the University of Indiana in the USA, where he taught Modern Greek language and philology, he earned a Master's degree and a PhD in Linguistics with honors. He has taught at the Secondary Education Training Institute, at the School of Modern Greek Language, and at the Athens Training Centers. He has actively participated in many symposia and seminars of linguistic and educational interest in Europe and America. He knows English, German, and French and has published over 150 studies, articles, and books of linguistic and philological content.
