Description

The Greek Revolution of 1821 mobilized different and often disparate forces of Hellenism residing both within and outside the Greek territory, which often took different paths but converged in an unprecedented event for the Balkans and Europe, a National Revolution that would cause a rupture in the world of Empires as it had been established after the end of the Napoleonic wars.

A FEW WORDS ABOUT THE SERIES

The Greek Revolution rightly ranks among the great revolutions that marked the Age of Modernity. The completion of two hundred years since its outbreak has understandably heightened the interest of modern Greeks to learn about its essential characteristics. This new series aims in that direction.

By portraying the profiles of five of the leading figures of the Greek Revolution (Theodoros Kolokotronis, Ioannis Kapodistrias, Petrompeis Mavromichalis, Rigas Feraios, Bouboulina) and analyzing five of the key themes related to it (The plan and outbreak of the Revolution, The constitutions of the Struggle, Internal disputes and conflicts, From the Chios Massacre to the Exodus of Mesolonghi, The role of the Great Powers in the Revolution) it aspires to contribute to public history and the dialogue about the character and forms of the Resurrection of the Greeks.

The volumes of the series are authored by distinguished historians and experts, following the rules of scientific research.

Read an excerpt

The Greek Revolution of 1821 is a deeply Greek historical event, but at the same time, it is also essentially European. It takes place within the timeline of the revolutions of 1820 that occurred across Europe during that period, although all of them ended unsuccessfully. Ideologically, it aligns with reformist and radical movements of 19th-century Europe, but it does not share their path. At a time when the spirit of the Enlightenment in Europe seems to be waning, following the same unsuccessful fate as the revolutionary movements of the era, the Greek Revolution of 1821 not only results in a successful outcome but also advances pioneering issues such as national unification, strengthening national consciousness, and building a strong national identity.
