The new single-volume enhanced version of the Individual and Social Skills Program for Kindergarten "Steps for Life" (edited by Vasilis Koutras) is published by Sokoli Editions with revised and expanded content. More specifically, the new edition, increased by over 100 pages, includes new theoretical background, a special section for addressing "problematic" behaviors of students, additional lessons on Stress Management and Resistance to Media Influence, along with corresponding letters to parents, as well as an additional section with guidelines for processing Sensitive Topics such as Grief Management and Sexual Education.
The new single-volume edition always comes with puppets and colored images (in electronic format) of the Program. "Steps for Life" is designed to support kindergarten teachers in teaching Social-Emotional Learning. The purpose of the Program is not to teach students behaviors but to teach them how to think, so they can develop Self-Esteem and Empathy and cultivate Individual and Social Skills, with an emphasis on Emotion Management and Problem Solving.
These Skills are referred to by the World Health Organization as "Life Skills" and are defined as the foundation of education (1993). The "Steps for Life" Program is a comprehensive and structured annual curriculum of 54 detailed lessons. It is based on the principles of the National Curriculum, New Curriculum Guidelines, and the New School, and was developed considering the Greek reality, while taking into account the structure and content of Social-Emotional Learning and Life Skills programs from universities and organizations in other countries (Canada, USA, Austria, Australia, Italy, etc.), which are approved by the World Health Organization.
The Program is packaged and consists of: a volume that includes the Educator's Manual, the Lesson Guide, which provides clear and detailed instructions for implementing the Program and presenting each teaching along with how it connects to the rest of the school's program (Detailed and Hidden Curriculum), as well as the Letters for the family, which contain a brief description of the content of each lesson, along with suggestions and directions for continuing learning at home.
A CD with images from children's daily life, to serve as discussion material in the Circle, and Emotion Masks, in life-size faces, for mask-making. The three puppets, a small monkey, a small frog, and a small giraffe that are used to introduce and demonstrate the way to use the taught concepts and skills, and the Stress Relief Circle game, which each child holds when it's their turn to talk about themselves.
