Based on Christian Troelsgård's book “Byzantine Neumes,” the science of Byzantine Musicology has been alive for over a century, with most of its studies written in Greek and English.

This Glossary attempts for the first time to correlate the two language codes at the level of terminology and meaning. Edited by musicologist and linguist Gerasimos-Sofoklis Papadopoulos, the Glossary is a distilled product of the translation process of Professor Christian Troelsgård's book “Byzantine Neumes,” which has also been published by Fagottobooks.

The definitions provided have been primarily extracted from the aforementioned book, with some additions from the editor himself where deemed necessary. Although at first glance the bilingual presentation of terms appears to be simply a useful tool for researchers of Byzantine Musicology, within the various definitions is condensed a wealth of musicological, historical, morphological, philological, and other information, making the Glossary a handy manual for those wishing to dive into the secrets of the ancient tradition of Byzantine chant.
