Description & Specifications

THE SUNDAY TIMES #1 BESTSELLER

The great aerial battle for the bridges in 1944 by the leading British historian and author of the classic work Stalingrad.

On September 17, 1944, General Kurt Student, founder of Nazi Germany's paratroopers, heard the growing noise of planes. He stepped onto his balcony over the flat landscape of southern Holland to watch the air armada of Dakotas and gliders carrying the British 1st Airborne and the American 101st and 82nd Airborne divisions.

Operation Market Garden, the plan to end the war quickly by capturing the bridges leading to the Lower Rhine and beyond, was a bold idea. Its failure had terrible consequences, especially for the Dutch, who risked everything to help. German atrocities were merciless and continued until the end of the war.

The British fascination with heroic failures has clouded Arnhem's history with myths. Antony Beevor, using often overlooked sources from Dutch, British, American, Polish, and German archives, has reconstructed the chilling reality of the battle, which General Student called 'The Last German Victory'. At the same time, this book, written in Beevor's unique and compelling narrative style, addresses much more than just a single dramatic battle. It examines the very heart of the war.
