The Adventure of Parliamentarism in Greece narrates the difficult and unstable journey of parliamentary life in Greece. Intense political confrontations and conflicts, genuine and fraudulent elections, foreign influences, and behind-the-scenes maneuvers compose this mosaic of the adventure of parliamentarism, through which the protagonists and their actions emerge, sometimes as pioneers and visionaries, other times as negative and fateful.
The third volume of The Adventure of Parliamentarism in Greece recounts the political developments from the Nazi Occupation to the military junta of the colonels. It was a dramatic era, full of polarization, which at the beginning was defined by a new major national division, the Greek Civil War, and towards the end was marked by a peak conflict between Prime Minister Georgios Papandreou and King Constantine II.
The beginning of the post-war period in Greece marked the entry of the country into the international Cold War scene. At the same time, it signified the 'dependence' of Greek parliamentarism on three poles of power that emerged strengthened from the Greek civil conflict: the American factor, the Crown, and the military.
The inability of Greek parliamentarism to overcome the increasing influence of these three poles led to the fateful biennium of 1965-1967, a continuous political impasse resulting in another overthrow of Greek democracy. The coup of the colonels would bring down the curtain on a defining and dramatic period for Greek parliamentarism.
The Greek democracy would remain under the heavy shadow of the dictatorship for seven years, until 1974. The Metapolitefsi, which would bring back fresh memories of the preceding period, would be the subject of the narrative in the fourth and final volume of The Adventure of Parliamentarism in Greece.
