Equally tragic, joyful, and comedic, Gabriel Garcia Marquez's masterpiece, "One Hundred Years of Solitude," is an unending combination of fantasy and reality, translated from Spanish by Gregory Rabassa in the Penguin Modern Classics series.
This great creation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez narrates the story of seven generations of the Buendía family and Macondo, the city they have built. Although it is nothing more than a settlement surrounded by mountains, Macondo has its wars and disasters, even its miracles and myths. A microcosm of Colombian life, its secrets are hidden, encoded in a book that only Aureliano Buendía can understand, deciphering its mysteries and revealing its blurred fate.
Combining political reality with magical realism, fantasy with comedic invention, "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is one of the most daringly original works of the twentieth century.
