The legendary comic book hero Zagor was created in 1961. His real name is Patrick Wilding, but the Indians call him Zagor or Za-Gor-Te-Nay, "The Spirit with the Axe".
Zagor's story is set in the northeastern part of the United States in the first half of the 19th century, in a rugged, inaccessible area of the fictional Darkwood Forest in Pennsylvania. Zagor is the legendary hero of the forests, mountains, and lakes who maintains peace between the white settlers and the Indians and punishes criminals. His parents were killed by the Abenaki Indians, guided by a fanatical white renegade. Zagor survived the massacre and was rescued from the river by the nomadic hunter, poet, and philosopher "Wandering" Fitz, whose real name is Nathaniel Fitzgerantson. Fitz raised him as his own son and trained him as a hunter and warrior.
In the comic book "Witiko!" written by Moreno Burattini and Roberto Ravera and illustrated by Emanuele Barison, Zagor, Chico, and their friend, Dr. Lester, investigate the fate of a group of soldiers who mysteriously disappeared in a snowstorm in the mountains. The three friends discover dead bodies torn apart by wolves. However, the "Spirit with the Axe" senses the presence of a monstrous creature in the area, which is also connected to other tragic deaths. The locals call it "Witiko," and it is a mysterious demon.
