Description

Description

The Rode NTG3 is a professional supercardioid (shotgun) condenser microphone designed for demanding applications in film production, television broadcasting, outdoor broadcast filming, and field recording. It features RF-bias (Radio Frequency) technology, which provides excellent resistance to high humidity, condensation, and extreme environmental conditions. It has a 0.50-inch (13 mm) capsule with a low self-noise level (8.2 dBA) and high sensitivity, delivering a natural frequency response with a rich low end and transparent high frequencies. Its construction is based on a solid, plated-brass body to minimize RF electromagnetic interference, while connectivity is provided via a standard 3-pin XLR output requiring 48V phantom power.

Basic Features

  • Microphone Type: Professional RF-Bias shotgun condenser microphone

  • Polar Pattern: Supercardioid (directional)

  • Capsule: 0.50" (13 mm) RF-Bias condenser capsule

  • Frequency Response: 40Hz – 20kHz

  • Output Impedance: 25 Ohms

  • Maximum SPL: 130 dB SPL (@ 1kHz, 1% THD into 1kΩ)

  • Sensitivity: -30.0dB re 1 Volt/Pascal (31.6mV @ 94 dB SPL) ± 2 dB @ 1kHz

  • Equivalent Noise Level (Self-Noise): 8.2 dBA (A-weighted – exceptionally low noise)

  • Dynamic Range: 121.8 dB

  • Signal-to-Noise Ratio (S/N Ratio): 85.8 dB (A-weighted)

  • Weather Resistance: High resistance to humidity, condensation, and extreme temperatures thanks to the RF-Bias circuitry

  • Power Requirements: +48V phantom power (4.3mA)

  • Connectivity: Professional 3-pin XLR output (gold-plated contacts)

  • Body Material: Plated solid brass body

  • Dimensions (Diameter x Length): 19 x 255 mm

  • Weight: 163 g

RF-Bias Technology & Resistance to Extreme Environmental Conditions

The Rode NTG3 incorporates RF-bias (Radio Frequency) technology, which replaces traditional high-impedance designs with a low-impedance RF circuit. This design makes the microphone virtually immune to moisture, rain, and condensation, allowing it to operate reliably in extreme outdoor filming environments (such as tropical or freezing climates) where conventional condenser microphones may produce noise or cut out.

Acoustic Performance & Ultra-Low Self-Noise

The NTG3’s acoustic design delivers an exceptionally low self-noise level of just 8.2 dBA, making it one of the quietest microphones in the shotgun category. Its supercardioid polar pattern ensures high directivity and excellent off-axis rejection, allowing clear recording of dialogue and focused sound sources even in environments with elevated background noise.

Brass Metal Construction & Professional Wiring

The microphone body is made from machined solid brass, providing high mechanical strength, shock protection, and shielding against radio-frequency interference (RF interference). Weighing just 163 g, it is ideal for use on boom poles without tiring the operator. The 3-pin XLR output ensures full compatibility with professional field recorders, audio consoles, and broadcast cameras.
