Description & Specifications

Written in different eras, from 1931 to 1975, the seven short stories that make up the last collection of short stories by Giannis Skarimpas, published in 1976 under the title Three Empty Chairs, reflect the author's writing journey and certify his achievements in the realm of creative prose.

Both his themes and narrative techniques do not differ from his other works, while the familiar pillars that hold together his fictional world prevail: the different other, the tradition of Karagiozis, the perception and flow of time, life as a reflection of art, the clown, the farce.

And while the stories are written at different points in time, they are subtly connected - with the exception of The Flower of Monemvasia - by the defining characteristics of the author's personal style: the dizzying language, the subversion of the realistic field, the oscillation between the real and the imaginary, the ironic idiolect, the playfulness.

This collection essentially closes the chapter of the author's prose production, sealing the uniqueness and significance of his contribution. In its best moments - which include the narratives The Last of 6 1/2, Zomio, the Circus Child, and Three Empty Chairs - Skarimpas, through the impeccable orchestration of his material, his unique linguistic boldness for the Greek context, and his narrative skill, manages to provide the reader with moments of genuine reading pleasure.
