In an era where oral history has gained particular significance in Greek historiography, this book brings something different to the need to understand the occupation famine, as well as how the memory of historical events changes.
The book offers the – perhaps last – oral stories of people who experienced the famine as adults. These interviews, conducted by the author two decades ago in Mykonos, Syros, and Chios, help us understand the period of the famine, the everyday life of people, and the ways in which they responded to the conditions they faced.
The experiences of the famine on the three islands were very different from one another – and all different from that of Athens. The interviews remind us that the official memory of the famine is that of Athens, a memory that ignores the radically different experiences of the provinces.
Twenty years after the interviews were conducted and following the economic crisis that turned historiography's attention to the Occupation, these interviews gain further relevance – they provide us with the perspectives of eyewitnesses of the Occupation and the famine, before they experienced the crisis of the last decade, offering us testimonies unaffected by the economic crisis and by the political "use" of the Occupation.
