Preparation period: For smaller species (canaries, exotic finches, British finches, budgerigars...), it is advisable to start preparing them for the transition. The goal is not to force the birds to eat pellets during this period. They simply need to learn to recognize pellets as part of their diet. For 2 to 3 weeks, they will be given the regular seed mix with a 10% blend of pellets. For parrots and parakeets, this step is not necessary.
The transition: During the transition period, seeds and pellets will no longer be mixed, but only pellets will be provided steadily. On certain days, following the schedule below, they will be given a bowl of seeds from which they can eat as much as they want, but the periods during which they will receive only pellets will increasingly grow, forcing them to consume more. 'Seed days' will be introduced into the program to prevent excessive weight loss. On these days, the birds will be able to replenish the energy amounts they will lose on the other days.
