The life and work of Nicholas Chrysovergis has already sparked the interest of scholars; however, no comprehensive study of his life and work has been undertaken to date. This study aims to fill that gap—specifically, to carry out a systematic investigation of all issues related to his life, personality, and work, within the context of the intellectual climate of the capital of Byzantium in the second half of the 12th century and the early 13th century.
Information about his life and activities is primarily drawn from his written works. From 1213 onwards, his traces in the intellectual world of Byzantium fade away. Chrysovergis's rhetorical work consists of three imperial encomiums, two patriarchal ones, a thanksgiving speech, and his preliminary exercises: five myths, two narratives, and two sketches. Only one letter survives from his epistolary work.
His poetic work is not insignificant either, consisting of twelve epitaphs of considerable value. In total, Chrysovergis's work is preserved in approximately 83 pages of manuscripts, which belong to 6 different codices from 6 different libraries. Two works have remained unpublished to this day: the letter and a patriarchal encomiastic speech. These works are published in the current study along with the second patriarchal encomium and the three imperial encomiastic speeches, as they need reissuing due to certain errors by previous editors.
