The short Platonic dialogue "Ion," which belongs to the works of the philosopher's early writing period (between the death of Socrates - 399 BC - and Plato's return from his first trip to Sicily - 388 BC), has posed and continues to pose a challenge for its scholars.
It is not so much the issue of its authenticity that has captured the interest of scholars, but rather its content, as it has been unanimously considered one of the most significant texts of ancient literary criticism and literary theory.
The issue of the authenticity of Ion can be said to no longer be debated. The last challenge to the authenticity of the dialogue by Moreau (1939) and its rebuttal by Verdenius (1943) revealed that, despite individual disagreements, all scholars agree on one fundamental point: the content of the dialogue is distinctly Platonic.
