Twelve women living in Britain, most of them black or mixed-race, of all ages, rich and poor, with different personalities and sexual orientations, have experienced social discrimination, racist behavior, and daily hardships from a young age.

Their stories about friends, family, lovers, and partners are woven around the quest for a better future in an ever-changing multicultural society.

Bernardine Evaristo (born 1959) to an English mother and Nigerian father, grew up in London where she lives and teaches creative writing. She is the first black author to be awarded the Booker Prize for this book (2019).
