Description

The translation of the Odyssey by G. Psychoundakis - which was first published in 1979 - was marked from the very beginning by the connection between the Cretan language and the Homeric one, and the use of rhyme for the first time in the rendering of the unrhymed original.

The main difference here was that it was not a scholarly translator speaking, but an ordinary person, who recreated Homer after having felt and absorbed him. He maintained the poetic content, the soul of the text, and conveyed it with the effortless naturalness of untainted speech, which still lives today in the Cretan village.

Along with the rizitiko song, which has not died, it still lives in Crete, whereas in many other places it becomes standardized and dwindles, a language so vibrant and expressive, worthy of conveying Homer.
