"Paleography" is the science that focuses on ancient writings in their various phases of evolution and transformation over the centuries.

According to the etymological origin of the word, paleography should encompass the entire history of writing and, to limit ourselves specifically to Greek culture, it should extend its boundaries from "Linear B," the writing of the Mycenaean period (15th century BC), to the definitive predominance of typography during the Renaissance.

However, the variety of writing material and research methods, as well as changes in calligraphic technique and the period to which the written monuments belong, have contributed to the creation of four distinct branches of this unified science: "epigraphy," "diplomatics," "paleography," and "papyrology."
