Description & Specifications

This volume is the second part of the work: "Modern Greek Grammar and Comparative ('Contrasting') Analysis. General Linguistic Principles. Phonetics. Introduction to Phonology. Part A: Theory" Thessaloniki 1984. University Studio Press.

In the Introduction of the first part it was stated (p. 28) that: 'The only way to become familiar with any science, as well as with any art, is to work through its problems.' This second part of the work aims to address this need by providing the opportunity for phonetic practice and phonological analysis.

Without actively addressing specific problems, any learning effort remains passive, becomes mechanical, and does not lead to substantial understanding.

Moreover, in this second part, a comparison is made of the pronunciation and the basic elements of the phonological system of Modern Greek and the other four languages that are particularly relevant in Greece, namely English, French, German, and Italian.

However, as we know a language better, especially our mother tongue, we tend to take its characteristics for granted and cannot approach it with the necessary distance; therefore, an additional opportunity is provided for the reader of the book to practice with problems from less known languages.

Some phonetic and phonological problems of Ancient Greek are also presented.
