The Fort Sumter board game by GMT Games is a card-driven strategy game for two players that depicts the secession crisis of 1860, which led to the bombardment of Fort Sumter and the American Civil War. Players take on the roles of the Unionist and the Secessionist, using strategy cards to gain political influence and contest control of areas. The game lasts three rounds and ends with the Final Crisis, where the cards saved for later determine the final political moves and the winner.
The map’s twelve areas represent four dimensions of the crisis: politics, secession, public opinion, and arms. Players earn victory points by controlling all three areas in a dimension or the space matching their secret objective. They can also accelerate the crisis by advancing through the Escalation, Tension, and Final Crisis zones. Being the first to break into the final zone offers a political advantage but costs victory points.
