TLDR: Very good device that I wouldn't recommend buying. Don't listen to the advertisements and those who have been paid; really, without Play Services, it will drive you crazy, and this comes from someone who deals with technology. Read about the operating system below to get a better picture.
The following review is written after about 3 years of using the P40 Pro, mainly for those who might want to acquire it instead of some low-range phone in 2024+. I have been using Huawei phones steadily since the P10.
- Very nice screen; I really never felt that it didn't meet my needs even once in the 3 years of use, and the 90Hz was flawless - although I've never tried 120Hz. The only complaint is the curved design, which, while very beautiful, does not allow for easy application of a screen protector.
- The build quality is very good, and the phone has a very nice design. Personally, I prefer it over the flagship S24 Ultra, iPhone, etc.; it seems more premium to me.
- The cameras are very good, although I would now say quite outdated. The main camera remains up to standard. The ultrawide never seemed that wide to me, to be honest. The telephoto lens was once satisfactory; now I feel it is outdated, and the quality is quite mediocre. Generally, for someone who uses a phone for general purposes, I believe it will cover them 100%. For more advanced users, you might want to go for something more advanced. Personally, I play with Pro Mode settings only with the main lens.
- The video is quite good as well, although I believe the advertised cinematic video of the ultrawide camera has worse quality than the video in x1. The stabilization is good; sometimes artifacts may appear, and often the 5x takes time to focus - it seems that for a short period, it simply crops the x1 setting.
- The battery was excellent in the first years of use - it easily lasted me a whole day. Now it needs charging maybe 2 times a day - of course, I constantly play music and consume media, so that's acceptable. It charges VERY FAST. Here, I should mention that a key factor is also the apps running in the background, which I will refer to right below.
- OPERATING SYSTEM: This device was the first released after the infamous ban, so it comes to us without a trace of Play Services. As someone who generally deals quite a bit with technology, I decided to take the risk. The device comes with EMUI 10 and now allows upgrades to EMUI 11 and EMUI 12. The updates were incredibly slow; we were really shocked to receive any security patch.
1) What works out of the box NOW: Almost all banks have joined Huawei's App Gallery and work seamlessly. For any other application, there is the option to install via Aurora Store or simply APKs. WARNING, it is not certain that they will work.
2) What worked and now does not work: Contactless payments via the bank apps, which have now been integrated exclusively into Google Wallet. The only alternative is Curve, which is slightly disappointing to use.
3) What DID NOT work + does not work: Anything related to Google. WARNING, when we say that the phone does not support Google, we do not mean the company's apps; that would be nothing. We mean ALL applications that require Google Services. For example, the COSMOTE App, WhatsApp, and many others. This directly affects notifications, and that is the biggest negative for me. NOTIFICATIONS DO NOT COME or they come late.
4) What can someone do to make certain applications work:
a) Install Gbox or Gspace. They are essentially virtual machines that emulate another phone that has Google services. They have ads, often crash, and consume a lot of battery.
b) Install MicroG. MicroG is an open-source project that replaces the basic Play Services so that we have functionality for the applications that require them. However, for them to work fully, signature spoofing is required, which Huawei has added to devices running EMUI 13.1+. So, for them to work decently, you need to wait for EMUI 13.1+ (if it comes). Again, do not expect 100% functionality. If the conditions are met, you will be able to use Google applications with login capability, EXCEPT for contactless transactions, Android Auto, and others.
c) The last solution and what I did is converting the global model to the Chinese one. Yes, you heard right. Because Huawei is more interested in the Chinese market and has disregarded us, they have decided to launch the latest software version HarmonyOS 4.2 in the P40 series in China and leave the rest of the world on EMUI 12. The Harmony 4.2 version provides signature spoofing and allows for 100% functionality of applications that require Google services. The conversion is not easy and I DID NOT do it myself. There are certain people (e.g., GMS Install & ministry of solutions) who can do it remotely. For me, it was totally worth it, given that recently the device had become unusable: Maps didn’t work at all, notifications came 2-3 hours late, etc. And again, of course, the experience is inferior to using a device with integrated Google services.
TLDR : Πολύ καλή συσκευή που όμως δεν θα συνιστούσα να αγοράσετε. Μην ακούτε τις διαφημίσεις και όσους έχουν πληρωθεί, πραγματικά χωρίς τα Play Services θα σπάσουν τα νεύρα σας και αυτό έρχεται από κάποιον που ασχολείται με τεχνολογία. Διαβάστε για το λειτουργικό παρακάτω για να έχετε καλύτερη εικόνα.
Το review που ακολουθεί γράφεται μετά από περίπου 3 έτη χρήσης του P40 Pro και κυρίως για εκείνους που ίσως θέλουν να το αποκτήσουν αντί για κάποιο low range το 2024+.
Χρησιμοποιώ Huawei κινητά από την εποχή του P10 σταθερά.
- Πολύ ωραία οθόνη, πραγματικά δεν ένιωσα οτι δεν με κάλυψε ούτε μια φορά στα 3 έτη χρήσης της & τα 90Hz ήταν άψογα - αν και δεν έχω δοκιμάσει ποτέ 120hz. Το μόνο παρόπονο η curved σχεδίαση που ενώ είναι πολύ όμορφη, δεν επιτρέπει σε εύκολη εφαρμογή προστατευτικού γυαλιού..
- Η ποιότητα κατασκευής είναι πολύ καλή και το κινητό έχει πολύ όμορφη σχεδίαση. Προσωπικά το προτιμώ από τις ναυαρχίδες S24 Ultra, iPhone κ.ο.κ., μου φαίνεται πιο premium.
- Οι κάμερες είναι πολύ καλές αν και πλέον θα έλεγα αρκετά ξεπερασμένες. Η βασική κάμερα παραμένει up to standard. Η ultrawide δεν μου φάνηκε ποτέ τόσο ευρυγώνια να πω την αλήθεια. Ο τηλεφακός κάποτε ήταν ικανοποιητικός, πλέον νιώθω ότι είναι ξεπερασμένος και η ποιότητα του αρκετά μέτρια. Γενικά για κάποιον που κάνει γενική χρήση ενός κινητού πιστεύω θα τον καλύψουν 100%. Για τους πιο προχώ, ίσως να πάτε επίσης σε κάτι προχώ. Προσωπικά παίζω με ρυθμίσεις Pro Mode μόνο με τον βασικό φακό.
- Το βίντεο αρκετά καλό επίσης αν και πιστεύω οτι το διαφημιζόμενο cinematic video της Ultrawide κάμερας έχει χειρότερη ποιότητα από το βίντεο σε x1. Η σταθεροποίηση καλή, ορισμένες φορές μπορεί να εμφανίζονται artifacts και πολλές φορές ο 5x αργεί να εστιάσει - φαίνεται πως για μικρό διάστημα κάνει απλώς crop η x1 ρύθμιση.
- Η μπαταρία τα πρώτα έτη χρήσης ήταν άριστη - πραγματικά μου έβγαζε άνετα μία μέρα ολόκληρη. Πλέον χρειάζεται φόρτιση μπορεί και 2 φορές την ημέρα - βέβαια παίζω συνέχεια μουσική και καταναλώνω μέσα οπότε δεκτό. Φορτίζει βέβαια ΤΑΧΙΣΤΑ. Εδώ να αναφέρω ότι βασικός παράγοντας είναι και οι εφαρμογές που τρέχουν στο background, για τις οποίες θα αναφερθώ ακριβώς από κάτω
- ΛΕΙΤΟΥΡΓΙΚΟ: Η συσκευή αυτή ήταν η πρώτη που κυκλοφόρησε μετά το φημισμένο ban, οπότε έρχεται στα χέρια μας χωρίς ίχνος Play Services. Εγώ ως άτομο που ασχολείται γενικά αρκετά με την τεχνολογία αποφάσισα να το ρισκάρω. Η συσκευή έρχεται με EMUI 10 και δίνεται πλέον η δυνατότητα αναβάθμισης σε EMUI 11 και EMUI 12. Τα Updates ήταν τρελά αργά, πραγματικά σαστήσαμε να πάρουμε κανένα security patch.
1) Τι δουλεύει out of the box ΠΛΕΟΝ : Όλες σχεδόν οι τράπεζες έχουν ενταχθεί στο App Gallery της Huawei και δουλεύουν απροβλημάτιστα. Για οποιαδήποτε άλλη εφαρμογή υπάρχει η δυνατότητα εγκατάστασης μέσω Aurora Store ή απλά APKs. ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ, δεν είναι σίγουρο ότι θα δουλέψουν.
2) Τι δούλευε και πλέον δεν δουλεύει : Οι ανέπαφες πληρωμές μέσω των εφαρμογών των τραπεζών, οι οποίες πλεον έχουν ενσωματωθεί αποκλειστικά στο google wallet. Η μόνη εναλλακτική είναι το Curve που η χρήση του είναι ελαφρώς απογοητευτική.
3) Τι ΔΕΝ δούλευε + δεν δουλέυει : Οτιδήποτε έχει να κάνει με Google. ΠΡΟΣΟΧΗ, όταν λέμε ότι το κινητό δεν υποστηρίζει Google δεν εννοούμε τις εφαρμογές της εταιρίας, αυτό θα ήταν ένα τίποτα. Εννοούμε ΟΛΕΣ τις εφαρμογές οι οποίες απαιτούν τα Google Services. Παράδειγμα η εφαρμογή COSMOTE App, το What'sApp και πολλά άλλα. Αυτό επηρεάζει ΑΜΕΣΑ και τις ειδοποιήσεις και αυτό είναι το μεγαλύτερο αρνητικό για εμένα. ΔΕΝ ΕΡΧΟΝΤΑΙ ΕΙΔΟΠΟΙΗΣΕΙΣ ή έρχονται καθυστερημένα.
4) Τι μπορεί να κάνει κάποιος για να κάνει ορισμένες εφαρμογές να δουλέψουν :
α) Εγκατάσταση Gbox ή Gspace. Είναι στην ουσία virtual machines που κάνουν emulate ένα άλλο κινητό που έχει google services. Έχουν διαφημίσεις, πολλές φορές crashάρουν και τρώνε πολύ μπαταρία.
β) Εγκατάσταση MicroG. Το MicroG είναι ένα open source project που αντικαθιστά τα βασικά Play Services έτσι ώστε να έχουμε λειτουργικότητα των εφαρμογών που τα απαιτούν. Για να μπορέσουν όμως να λειτουργήσουν πλήρως, απαιτείται signature spoofing, που η Huawei έχει προσθέσει στις συσκευές που τρέχουν EMUI 13.1+. Οπότε για να σας δουλεύουν αξιοπρεπώς πρέπει να περιμένετε το EMUI 13.1+ (εάν έρθει). Και πάλι μην περιμένετε όμως 100% λειτουργικότητα. Εάν πληρούνται οι προϋποθέσεις, θα μπορείτε να χρησιμοποιείται τις εφαρμογές google με log in δυνατότητα, ΕΚΤΟΣ από τις ανέπαφες συναλλαγές, android auto και άλλα.
γ) Η τελευταία λύση και αυτό που έκανα εγώ είναι η μετατροπή του global μοντέλου σε κινέζικο. Ναι καλά ακούσατε. Επειδή η Huawei ενδιαφέρεται περισσότερο για την κινέζικη αγορά και εμάς μας έχει χεσμένους, έχει αποφασίσει να λανσάρει την τελευταία έκδοση λογισμικού HarmonyOS 4.2 στην σειρά P40 στην Κίνα και να αφήσει τον υπόλοιπο κόσμο σε EMUI12. Η έκδοση Harmony 4.2 δίνει signature spoofing και επιτρέπει σε 100% λειτουργικότητα των εφαρμογών που απαιτούν τα services της google. Η μετατροπή δεν είναι εύκολη και ΔΕΝ την έκανα μόνος μου. Υπάρχουν ορισμένα άτομα (πχ GMS Install & ministry of solutions) που μπορούν να το κάνουν εξ αποστάσεως. Για εμένα άξιζε φουλ, με δεδομένο ότι τον τελευταίο καιρό η συσκευή είχε αχρηστέψει : Τα Maps δεν λειτουργούσαν καν, οι ειδοποιήσεις έρχοταν 2-3 ώρες αργότερα κ.ο.κ. Και πάλι βέβαια η εμπειρία είναι κάτωτερη από το αν χρησιμοποιούσα μία συσκευή με ενσωματωμένα google services.
