Description

Description

Sociolinguistic studies, although heterogeneous in terms of their subject matter and methodology, share two common characteristics: the attempt to introduce the political element into linguistics and a critical stance toward modern linguistics. Unlike sociology, psychology, history, or geography, which have all undergone deep internal crises, linguistics has not faced any radical questioning. Questions concerning the work of linguists, the significance of language description, the organization of linguistic research in France, its institutional position, and its social role have not at all occupied linguists.
