The purpose of this structural-functional and communicative Grammar of Modern Greek is to systematically describe the morphological and syntactic structures of the contemporary language, the way in which syntactic functions and lexical elements contribute to the organization of the message as well as their use in communication.
The authors of this grammar aim to both utilize the achievements of modern linguistic science and to document the contemporary Greek language, highlighting its dynamics and evolutionary trends.
The grammar is written in such a way as to meet the requirements of specialists (teachers, philologists, linguists, etc.), while also being accessible to the non-specialist reader.
This represents a different conception and a new perspective on issues of language analysis, which inherently leads to a different structure of the grammar. Specifically, the presentation of the material does not begin from the traditional categories of parts of speech but from concepts and functions of the language that are fundamental to communication.
