During World War I, in the Pacific Ocean, the warlike Rasputin saves Pandora and Cain Grovesnor, cousins of a wealthy family, along with his adventurous and loyal friend, Corto Maltese! He holds the children captive because he is about to meet the mysterious masked "Monk", who controls all the pirates in the area, as well as Corto, who despite his reactionary nature, can help him. However, during the trade negotiations between Rasputin and Lieutenant Sluter, a wave overturns the ship and the children, along with Corto, end up on the secret island of the area, Escondida. The action, therefore, moves to the place that serves as the lair of the "Monk" and where the young Grovesnors will get involved in a complex game with political implications, assassinations, conspiracies, and secret alliances, until this unexpected series of events is completed...
