P. Cornelius Tacitus, the most prominent of Roman historians, was born between 50 and 60 A.D. and died between 115 and 117 A.D. He was educated in rhetorical schools and first became known as a rhetorician. He held various political offices, such as praetor, general, consul, etc.

Despite the rhetorical tone of his works, he strives to refer to sources, whether oral or written, in the exploration of truth, as well as to the writings of earlier historians. He seeks the causas and rationes, that is, the evident and hidden causes of events, and he is moreover an unsurpassed psychologist.

His works:

  1. “Dialogue on Rhetoricians” (Dialogus de oratoribus). In this work, he attempts to explain the reasons for the decline of rhetoric during the imperial times.
  2. “Agricola” (Agricola or De vita et moribus Iullii Agricolae), a laudatory biography rich in historical details about Britain, where Agricola was sent to subdue the territory.
  3. “Germania” (Germania), a geographical and ethnographic description of the country and its inhabitants.
  4. “Histories” (Historiae), in 14 books of which the first 5 are preserved. They include events from the years 69-96 A.D. The work was written during the time of Trajan (98-117 A.D.).
  5. “Annals” (Annales) in 16 books. This work is also titled “Ab excessu divi Augusti libri”. It includes the chronological history of Rome from the death of Augustus (14 A.D.) to the death of Nero (68 A.D.).
