Description

“We constantly ask about meaning. Perhaps our mistake lies in the question itself. Perhaps we should not seek meaning - but rather give it.” Thoughts on the Necessity of Love is a book that has been beloved since its first publication in 1974, as it attempts to bridge the gap between love, life, and death. These are the three players that fill life with happiness, anguish, and pain. No one can bear the absence of love, but how many can tolerate its presence?

“... A personality distinguished in all genres of written word (essay, prose, poetry, satire, criticism, aphorisms, column writing), but also in photography and advertising. Nikos Dimou is a spiritual decathlete, one of the very few today, not only in our country but globally. Like track and field decathletes, he does not have the top performance in every discipline (although he does in some), but he is the most complete type of spiritual athlete. Very few can compete with him in clarity and elegance of style or in the succinct richness of his statements.

Almost inevitably, it took time for him to be recognized in the intellectual sphere and to some degree, he remains controversial. One reason is his ironic yet intense criticism of traits of the modern Greek character that most idealize (he was given the title of anti-Hellenist for this, which he eagerly embraced to mock). Another reason is his colossal education, his many talents, and his success where he applied them: in Greece, as responsibly attested to by ministerial lips, excellence breeds envy.

[...] But the resistance of the established intellect to minds like Nikos Dimou's rather confirms their value than makes it doubtful. He owes his fame mainly to the well-known "The Misery of Being Greek," which, when it first came out forty years ago, entertained or outraged many as irreverent satire, but the deeper truth of his observations has only recently begun to hover as a suspicion in the public consciousness.

Nikos Dimou has published more significant books such as the brilliant philosophical essays "The Greek Buddha" and "The Absolute and Backgammon," or the unique "The Light of the Greeks," which marries philosophy, poetry, aphorism, and photography in a stunning composition.” Dimosthenis Kourtovik, “A Multifaceted Mind” Ta Nea 26.9.15

Review this product
  • A book that requires the reader to have a deeper education, practically and not theoretically. Love, honor, and solidarity are important in our lives, but the continuous giving that makes the recipient an entity that does not understand individual responsibility and manipulates the sensitivity of the giver is a sick condition/reality that many people use for their own reasons. My need to give, filling the void of acceptance, usually perpetuates a pathology of our society, which in the long term does more harm than good.
