Perhaps Stephen King's most terrifying book to date. The master of horror returns to his classic themes, weaving them into America during the crisis period.
Late at night, in a quiet suburb of Minneapolis, unknown intruders break into the Ellis family's home and, after silently killing the parents of twelve-year-old Luke, they abduct him and load him into a black SUV. Luke wakes up at the Institute, in a room just like his, but without windows. Outside his door are other doors, behind which other children with special abilities, such as telepathy and telekinesis, are held. They too have come here in a similar way. There is Kalisa, Nick, George, Iris, and ten-year-old Avery Dixon.
In this harsh institution, the director, Mrs. Siggby, and her staff are utterly devoted to their purpose: to extract from the children the power that accounts for their supernatural gifts. There are no moral qualms. If you cooperate, you earn tokens for the snack and soda vending machines. If not, the punishment is severe. One by one, the children disappear and Luke desperately searches for a way to escape. But no one has escaped from the Institute so far...
Unspeakably terrifying, as much as Firestarter, but with the strength of the child's perspective from It, The Institute is a tragic and shocking story where good battles evil in a world where the good do not always win.
They said about the book: "Classic King with extra doses of tension and rage. Behind the dizzying plot and the familiar torrential prose lies the book's central driving force – a concern that could not be more timely: the inhumane treatment of children... Once again, behind the curtain of King's imagination, the real world peeks at us... A first-rate work that has something important to say." –The Washington Post
"Chilling, touching, and horrifyingly realistic... The carefree description of the unknown as an imminent threat is the hallmark of King's writing." –The Boston Globe
"Of all the cosmic threats that King’s heroes have faced over time, this slow slide into cruelty and inhumanity may be the most terrifying because it is the most real." –The New York Times Book Review
