The work, with its dual nature, musical and poetic, was a test of memory and a tribute to Spinalonga, the small island with the Venetian fortress in the Mirabello Bay, where, from 1903 to 1957, Greek lepers were exiled: a tribute to human pain but also to human resilience.
Images and incidents from the life and sufferings of the lepers, primarily as recounted in the Autobiography of Epaminondas Remountakis, with their archetypical counterpart being the descent into Hades, as narrated by the Apokopos of Bergadis, alternate with choral, lyrical sections and interludes.
The Apokopos of Spinalonga was written at the request of the municipality of Agios Nikolaos and was performed on the island on July 18, 2018.
