The philhellene Jacques Mangeart (1805-1874) arrived in Patras in 1828 with the expeditionary force of Maison, participating in the establishment of the Franco-Greek printing house. From his experiences, he wrote his Memoirs, where his sympathy for the suffering Greeks is evident and his intention to defend them against the negative "public opinion" of Europe is acknowledged.
