Pinter is an honest writer; he warns us that the material he sells (words) is made from coins that sound counterfeit. He is therefore unreliable and is aware that he is advertising his own unreliability; honest, since he reveals his dishonesty to us.
He never condescended to use the degenerate and utterly deceptive language of honesty, sincerity, or innocence, which for years has stained British theater. Pinter's language has never been virtuous; it was corrupt from birth.
Pinter's idiom is essentially human because it is an idiom of lies and strategies. He never compromised with an audience that goes to the theater to settle in, have fun, find solace, be patronized, or be educated.
