Description & Specifications

The work of the linguist is the scientific study and systematic analysis of language. The work of the linguist who deals with translation for educational purposes includes, among others: a) the highlighting of the relationships that govern linguistics and translation, b) the application of a linguistic theory for the analysis of the text to and/or from translation, and c) the proposal of methodological tools to support the practicing translator in the undeniably challenging task of translation.

The aim of this book is to put the above objectives into practice by defining the translation unit with syntactic criteria, borrowed from Structural and Functional Linguistics, and proposing it as a methodological tool for segmenting the source text. With this proposal, which is applied here to the French-Greek pair, practicing translators are given the opportunity to engage with the meanings conveyed by the source text, so that they become fully understood before being transferred to the target language.

By following this approach, errors stemming from misinterpretations, contradictory interpretations, or non-interpretations are avoided, while simultaneously recognizing cultural, semantic, syntactic, morphological, and lexical peculiarities, which are then to be rendered in the best possible way in the translation.
