With awe, we present some thoughts around this vast chapter - perhaps a pillow - of history, attempting to give a mark of it through a fingerprint, which is the Holy Church of God Sophia, a imprint that remains - especially in the souls of the Greeks - indelible to this day.
This book deviates from the line of traditional writing on what is wrongly referred to as the Byzantine Empire - a term first used by Hieronymus Wolf in 1562. The title THE EMPIRE OF CONSTANTINOPLE was chosen, as this was essentially what is formally referred to as the Roman Empire until its fall.
The Romanism was a ghost title. Centered in Constantinople - an extension of Greek Byzantium - a new type of state was born, which maintained - apart from the title - very few Roman elements; a new state with its own ideological religious framework, with its own population mix - predominantly Greek or Greek-speaking - where the language of the Church, which shapes the new spiritual climate, is Greek, a language that gradually becomes the official state language, while continuing to develop in its popular form.
In general terms, this book deals with the birth of a new state, with a Greek-Christian spiritual content, while also examining at length the de-Romanization of the West and the birth of a Europe with barbarian racial roots.
And something that relates to the subtitle: the Hagia Sophia was not merely the pinnacle of the Empire's architecture; it was an ideological and religious symbol, which especially for the Greek people was and remains a super-symbol, once national and religious, today more religious.
