Description & Specifications

"History of Anaesthesia VII" is the seventh volume of an extremely successful series of publications from the International Congresses on the History of Anaesthesia, which were first held in 1982 in Rotterdam and take place every four to five years in various locations around the world. These congresses discuss evidence related to past initiatives and promote research on how earlier scientists thought and worked.

This volume contains the Proceedings of the 7th Congress held in Heraklion, Greece, in 2009. It is a collection of essays related to the history of anaesthesia by individual contributors rather than a narrative account of the evolution of anaesthesia. The historical development of analgesia and anaesthesia, from the empirical and experimental process to its impressive modern development, from the early desperate attempts of humans to relieve pain from injuries and illnesses back to the roots of modern anaesthesia—one and a half centuries ago—is fascinating.

The long journey—from the early recorded history to the last decades—follows the transition and transformation of the history of medicine, which replaced theocratic beliefs and philosophical assumptions with logical scientific thought. This timeless dimension of history, which highlights the process by which the specialty of anaesthesiology gained its current scientific significance, is also expressed in the Proceedings of the 7th International Congress on the History of Anaesthesia.

The essays included in this volume are chronologically arranged into five historical periods, from antiquity to the modern era: Ancient Greece, Early Modern Period, 19th Century, 20th Century, and also in a separate section for the Pioneers of Anaesthesia. The information presented covers an impressive variety of facts and practices, showcasing the evolutionary path of analgesia and anaesthesia from ancient times to the 20th century.
